Athletic 3-Star Defensive Back Commits To Texas Tech Football…

Versatile East Texas D-Lineman Braylon Rigsby commits to Texas Tech - Sports Illustrated High School News, Analysis and More

After a busy weekend hosting some high-caliber recruits, Joey McGuire and the Texas Tech football program have picked up an intriguing defensive back for the class of 2025.

Swayde Griffin, a 3-star defensive back from Lago Vista, Texas announced his commitment to the Red Raiders on Monday via social media.

The 6-foot-1, 185-pounder is listed by 247Sports.com as the No. 101 corner in the nation and the No. 180 player in Texas. In addition to Texas Tech, he holds offers from the likes of Arizona, Arizona State, and Minnesota.

However, the Red Raiders were Griffin’s first offer and that early connection appears to have paid dividends. The two-sport athlete who won UIL 4-A 110M hurdles state title was in Lubbock this past weekend and now he’s set to become a Red Raider.

“I had no idea they were coming down,” Griffin told Greg Powers of Dave Campbell’s Texas Football of the day Texas Tech offered him a scholarship nearly a year ago.

“They just showed up one day. I thought they were going to recruit me for track, honestly, but then they gave me the offer, and that was great.”

Fans may be more familiar with Griffin’s father, Cedric, who played defensive back for the Texas Longhorns from 2002-05 and who played in the NFL for seven years, six with the Minnesota Vikings and one with the Washington franchise. The elder Griffin racked up eight picks and 412 tackles in his NFL career.

Griffin is commit No. 13 for the Red Raiders in the class of 2025, a recruiting haul that sits at No. 23 nationally according to 247Sports. Interestingly enough, he is also the fourth defensive back in the class.

On Sunday, Texas Tech head coach Joey McGuire twice posted on social media a .GIF of former professional wrestler Rick Flair, a practice Texas Tech fans know to mean that McGuire has received a commitment of some kind from a prospective player. Even if one of those was for Griffin, there should be more good news coming on the recruiting front.

This is a hectic time of year for football recruiting and that is likely to continue over the coming days and weeks as Texas Tech is set to host another group of high-priority targets this coming weekend.

So keep checking in with Wreck ’em Red for all the updates as McGuire and Co. continue to put together another strong recruiting haul on the South Plains.
