SAD NEWS: Nebraska Cornhuskers announce the departure of eight key players

Nebraska quarterback Chubba Purdy officially enters the transfer portal.
Nebraska football quarterback Chubba Purdy has entered the transfer portal, Rivals.com reported on Wednesday night.

Purdy, a 6-foot-2, 210-pound graduate transfer, can play immediately in 2024 and will have two seasons of eligibility remaining.
Purdy spent the previous two seasons in Lincoln. He appeared in 12 games, starting four, and completing 50 percent of his passes (53-of-105) for 529 yards, two touchdowns, and six interceptions. Purdy also rushed for 53 yards and three touchdowns between 2022 and 2023.

Purdy joined Nebraska in January 2022, after spending the first two seasons of his career at Florida State.

Purdy is the fourth scholarship player to leave the Huskers’ program this offseason, following defensive backs Javier Morton (who left in October) and Tamon Lynum, tight end/linebacker Jake Appleget, and quarterback Jeff Sims.

The departures of Sims and Purdy leave Nebraska’s quarterback room very young and inexperienced, despite its potential. The Huskers currently have three scholarship quarterbacks on the roster, including Heinrich Haarberg, who will enter his fourth year in the program in 2024 after starting eight games in 2023, and freshmen Dylan Raiola and Daniel Kaelin.

Raiola is the most significant recruit win in modern Husker history. The legacy recruit is ranked as the top quarterback in the Class of 2024 and the second-best overall recruit. Kaelin is rated three stars in the 2024 class. Both quarterbacks were Elite 11 finalists last summer.

In 2023, the Huskers had two walk-on quarterbacks: Luke Longval, a transfer from Iowa Western Community College, and Jack Woche, an Ole Miss transfer.
