The St. Louis Cardinals are certain to trade eight-time All-Star Nolan Arenado, who has revealed the six teams he will accept a trade to in order to join a winning organization.
Among those teams is the Boston Red Sox, who despite already having Triston Casas and Rafael Devers at the corner infield positions, could potentially find a fit for Arenado.
Will Venable on team’s outlook heading into 2025
Thomas Gauvain of FanSided proposed a wild trade idea that involves St. Louis sending Arenado and left-hander JoJo Romero to Boston for prospects Richard Fitts and Jhostynxon Garcia.
“The Boston Red Sox just traded their top prospect for pitcher Garrett Crochet, so they may be more apt to hold onto their prospects and instead opt for free agency to fill out their roster.
Additionally, they have a crowded infield between Rafael Devers and Triston Casas already, so finding time for Arenado would be tricky,” Gauvain wrote.
“However, they keep cropping up as a good match for Nado, and the potential is there. He would be a defensive upgrade at the hot corner over Devers, and his offense could improve thanks to the Green Monster in left field.”
The Red Sox have talked about potentially moving Devers to first base, and Arenado has also expressed a willingness to change positions.
Fitts would give the Cardinals an extra young arm that they could instantly plug into their rotation and have as an insurance policy if Miles Mikolas and Steven Matz do not pan out.
Arenado would then get a fresh start with a team that appears to be trending upwards. He hit .272 this season with 16 home runs and 71 RBI along with a .719 OPS.
Perhaps a change of scenery could help him rebound in 2025. We’ll see if anything comes of this proposed trade.
