Bills star quarterback Josh Allen will not play in the team’s preseason opener Saturday against the Colts, coach Sean McDermott announced ahead of the team’s final day of training camp.

McDermott would not go as far as to determine playing time for Saturday for any of the other team’s starters.

“Josh is not going to play,” McDermott said. “And we’ll take it on an individual basis from there.”

McDermott noted that the Bills will have a more intense practice Thursday to wrap up camp that will factor into the decision on playing time in the preseason opener.

“Give our trainers, our strength and conditioning staff and myself a chance to reevaluate where we are, each individual and what they need to do in this game perhaps or not in this game based on how it looks today,” he said.

Allen sitting out the preseason opener does not come as a surprise as the QB played in just one preseason game last year.

McDermott also updated the health status of a handful of players, including All-Pro safety Jordan Poyer who sustained an elbow injury during week two of camp. McDermott shared that Poyer is “trending in the right direction” but did not give a target date for his return.
