Baylor backup quarterback Kyron Drones announces plan to transfer to Virginia Tech
The former four-star quarterback is seeking greener pastures following two seasons with the Bears.
Exactly a week after the transfer portal opened up for all FBS athletes, Baylor’s backup quarterback Kyron Drones declared his intent to transfer to Virginia Tech. The announcement came in the form of a Twitter post from Drones’ personal account.
On Nov. 30, Drones announced his plan to enter the transfer portal. That news also came in the form of a social media post from his Twitter account. In that tweet, Drones left the door open on a potential return to Baylor, but that obviously comes to a close now with his commitment to the Hokies.
Drones, a former four-star recruit recruit, was a highly coveted slinger in the transfer portal. According to 247 Sports, Drones was the No. 6 quarterback available. The Pearland native appeared in two games during his freshman season before ultimately redshirting. In 2022, Drones played backup to Blake Shapen and saw most of his action against West Virginia, where he replaced Shapen in the third quarter due to injury.
The second-year quarterback completed 7 of 14 passes for 95 yards and a touchdown. He also threwone interception, as the team was desperately trying to find a win over the Mountaineers on the road.
While the Shadow Creek High School graduate battles for the starting job at Virginia Tech, the quarterback room looks very sparse for the Bears. Seventh-year senior QB Luke Anthony will serve as Shapen’s backup for the 2022 Lockheed Martin Armed Forces Bowl game against Air Force on Dec. 22. The only other quarterbacks listed on Baylor’s depth chart and roster are freshman Brayson McHenry and junior Landry Kinne.
