As the Wisconsin Badgers commence their spring football practice on March 13, head coach Luke Fickell faces five pivotal questions that could shape the team’s 2025 season:
1. How will the defensive line improve?
The Badgers’ defensive line struggled in 2024, allowing an average of 165 rushing yards per game and recording only 17 sacks. To address this, Wisconsin added several transfers, including Corey Walker from Western Michigan and Jay’viar Suggs from LSU. Spring practice will reveal how these new additions bolster the defensive front.
2. What will Jeff Grimes’ offensive scheme entail?
New offensive coordinator Jeff Grimes brings his “reliable, violent offense” (RVO) philosophy to Madison. His system emphasizes a strong running game complemented by versatile formations. Spring sessions will provide insights into how quickly players adapt to this approach.
3. Can young running backs step up?
With the departure of key running backs, sophomores Darrion Dupree and Dillin Jones have an opportunity to lead the ground game. Dupree contributed 317 yards and a touchdown last season, while Jones showed promise in limited action. Their development during spring practice is crucial for the offense’s success.
4. Will the secondary have sufficient depth?
The Badgers’ secondary experienced significant turnover, losing 10 defensive backs. The return of starters Ricardo Hallman and Nyzier Fourqurean provides some stability. However, integrating transfers like D’yoni Hill (Miami) and Geimere Latimer (Jacksonville State) will be essential to maintain defensive integrity.
5. Who will emerge at outside linebacker?
With the departure of key contributors, the outside linebacker position is open for competition. Returning players Aaron Witt and Darryl Peterson, along with transfers Mason Reiger (Louisville) and Tyreese Fearbry (Kentucky), will vie for starting roles. Spring practice will be pivotal in determining the depth chart.
Addressing these questions during spring practice will be vital for the Badgers as they aim to rebound from a challenging 2024 season and reestablish themselves as contenders in the Big Ten.
