Breaking News: Ohio governor nominates legendary ex-football coach Jim Tressel for lieutenant governor

Ohio Governor Mike DeWine has nominated former Ohio State University football coach Jim Tressel to serve as the state’s next lieutenant governor. This appointment follows the vacancy left by Jon Husted, who was selected to fill the U.S. Senate seat vacated by Vice President JD Vance.

Tressel, 72, is renowned for leading the Ohio State Buckeyes to a national championship in 2002 and securing six Big Ten titles during his tenure from 2001 to 2010. After resigning amid a memorabilia-for-cash scandal in 2011, he transitioned into academic leadership, serving as president of Youngstown State University from 2014 until his retirement in 2023.

Governor DeWine praised Tressel as “a natural leader” with a deep understanding of Ohio. Tressel expressed humility regarding the nomination, acknowledging his lack of political experience but emphasizing his commitment to learning and contributing to the state’s progress.

The nomination now awaits confirmation from the Ohio Senate and House. Discussions about Tressel potentially running for governor in 2026 have not occurred, though the political landscape is already active with candidates preparing their campaigns.

Tressel’s appointment introduces a prominent figure from Ohio’s sports and academic sectors into the state’s political arena, reflecting Governor DeWine’s confidence in his leadership abilities and dedication to Ohio’s development.
