Grimsby Town legend Craig Disley announces retirement from football after 22-year career
The former Mariners captain has decided to hang up his boots after a career that saw him make over 750 professional appearances
Grimsby Town legend Craig Disley has announced his retirement from football.
The former midfielder made the announcement on social media as he brings to an end a 22-year career.
Disley spent six years with the Mariners after signing from Shrewsbury in 2011, and was the man who ultimately led Town back into the Football League as he captained them to play-off victory at Wembley in 2016.
He made over 250 appearances across all competitions during his time at Blundell Park, scoring 34 league goals in the process, including a number of vital goals to help his side out on various occasions.
Before heading to Cleethorpes, Disley had long spells at Mansfield and Bristol Rovers, before spending two years with the Shrews.
He clocked up over 750 appearances in professional football, and made five appearances at Wembley during his playing career.
In recent years, Disley has gone back into non-league football following his departure from Town in 2017.
He made the move to Alfreton from Blundell Park, before heading to Cleethorpes Town on loan and ending his career with Barton Town.
Posting on Instagram, Disley said: “Coming up to 22 years after making my professional debut the time has come to finally call it a day and hang up the boots.
“Never growing up could I have dreamed of having such a long and successful career in the game I love. 750 professional games and 90 goals is something I’m very proud of.
“There’s been promotions, relegations, play-off final wins, play-off final defeats, cup final defeats, safe to say it’s had it all.
