In a significant coaching shift, Chip Kelly has departed from his role as Ohio State’s offensive coordinator to assume the same position with the Las Vegas Raiders under new head coach Pete Carroll. This move marks Kelly’s return to the NFL after his tenure with the San Francisco 49ers in 2016.
During his single season with the Buckeyes, Kelly played a pivotal role in leading the team to a national championship, showcasing his offensive acumen. His departure leaves a notable vacancy in Ohio State’s coaching staff. In response, the Buckeyes are promoting wide receivers coach Brian Hartline to offensive coordinator. Hartline, who joined Ohio State in 2017 and became the wide receivers coach in 2018, has been instrumental in developing a formidable receiving corps. It remains uncertain whether Hartline or head coach Ryan Day will handle play-calling duties for the upcoming season.
Kelly’s new role with the Raiders comes with a $6 million annual salary, making him the highest-paid coordinator in the NFL. The Raiders are in need of an offensive revival after finishing 27th in yards per game and 29th in scoring in the 2024 season.
