Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone makes shocking statement on breaking the sub-50 barrier in 400m hurdles
Reigning Olympic champion Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone recently made an astounding statement when she was asked about breaking the under-50 seconds mark in the 400m hurdles.
The reigning Olympic and World champion, Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone, has established herself as one of the most dominant track and field athletes in the world with record-breaking performances in almost every track appearance. She is one of the most decorated American athletes, with four Olympic gold medals and four World Championship medals (three golds and one silver). In addition, the 25-year-old is the first woman hurdler in history to dip under 51 seconds and under 52 seconds in the 400m hurdles.
Despite being the world record holder in the domain, the New Jersey native is yet to break the under-50 seconds mark, a milestone her fans have been waiting for a while now. Although McLaughlin-Levrone has broken the world record several times, but she has yet to approach a sub-50 time. With anticipation building around the achievement, she recently made an astounding remark when asked about breaking that record.
Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone’s views on the challenge
In an interview with World Athletics, the three-time Olympian expressed that even though she is trying her best to dip below the 50-second mark, she is also focused on giving her best on the track without letting it distract her from winning races and do well as an athlete during the competitions.
“That definitely is on my mind for sure. An athlete would naturally want to do that. Whether that happens or not is up to God. I’m just going to work for it, I can’t put a number on it,” she said. “It may be me, or maybe an athlete in five or 10 years from now. So, I’m just going to continue to try to be the best I can be and if it comes it comes, and if it doesn’t, it doesn’t. But I think for me it’s just the desire to improve.”
Notably, the American hurdling icon has broken the women’s 400m hurdles record four times, beginning with surpassing her fellow American legend Dalilah Muhammad’s record in 2021 by winning that year’s Olympic trials in 51.90 seconds. Even at this year’s Paris Olympics in August, she defended her hurdles title by breaking her own world record with 50.37 seconds.
