Vikings legend Randy Moss says he survived cancer and is recovering from Whipple surgery
There has been a lot of speculation about the Minnesota Vikings great’s health since Sunday. Moss is thankful to everyone around him who helped him with his diagnosis.
“But I’m back. Your boy is back, man,” said Moss.
Moss was on an Instagram livestream on Friday sitting in a chair with a cane. He says he was in the hospital for six days.
“So I did have cancer. They found it in the bile duct right between the pancreas and the liver, and the cancer was sitting right outside the bile duct,” said Moss.
Moss thanked his family, friends, fans, and co-workers for the prayers. But he thanked his doctors the most as he underwent surgery.
“I had a Whipple procedure. And I’m not going to go into detail about the Whipple procedure,” said Moss.
Dr. Nguyen Tran of the Mayo Clinic explains why someone would need a Whipple procedure.
“Typically, with that type of procedure, it is more on the distal bile duct cancer, less likely a liver cancer. Typically, primary liver cancer occurs in the liver,” said Dr. Tran.
Tran doesn’t know Moss’ exact diagnosis. But she breaks down what bile duct cancer is.
“If the liver was not touched or in any way, then it’s less likely that that would be liver cancer. So in this case, yes, it could be bile duct cancer, which is a form of primary liver cancer or pancreatic cancer,” said Tran.
Moss didn’t say exactly what his cancer diagnosis was, just that he was able to get the treatment he needed. He adds that he has to go through chemotherapy and some radiation treatment.
