Miami Hurricanes quarterback Cam Ward has emerged as one of the top players in college football and a likely top pick in the 2025 NFL Draft.
His rise to the top of draft boards is even more impressive, considering where he was just a year ago.
At the time, Ward was at Washington State and considering entering the 2024 NFL Draft. However, scouts weren’t exactly sold on him, with many projecting him as a mid-to-late-round selection.
“Gave him a grade equivalent to 5th rnd,” one NFL scout said. “Might go a round or two earlier bc of the upside though.” Ward decided to bet on himself and return for a fifth year of college football, transferring to the University of Miami in the process.
That move has paid off in a big way, and now he’s widely projected to go inside the top five in almost every NFL mock draft. Many of them have him going to either the Las Vegas Raiders or the New York Giants, two teams in need of a quarterback.
On Saturday night, ahead of the Heisman Trophy ceremony, Ward was asked why the Giants should consider drafting him. He didn’t hold back, confidently promoting himself to Giants general manager Joe Schoen.
“If Joe (Schoen) want to come get me, he knows what’s best,” Ward said at the podium. “The tape says it all. You’re gonna get a competitor out of me, the city of New York. I won’t be in the city probably ever. I’ll stay in New Jersey for all day, every day. It’s too much out here. I’ll just be vibing and trying to make some football plays for the Giants.”
In 2024, the West Columbia, Texas native put up numbers, throwing for 4,123 yards, 36 touchdowns, and just seven interceptions. He also showcased his mobility, adding 196 rushing yards and four touchdowns on the ground. Ward will learn which organization he’ll be a part of when the 2025 NFL Draft kicks off on April 25 at 8 p.m. ET.
