BOISE, Idaho (CBS2) — Boise State wide receiver Eric McAlister is leaving the Broncos effective immediately.
Head football coach Andy Avalos says, “Eric McAlister has chosen to no longer compete as a member of our program. We wish him the best in the future, and our focus remains on our next game.”
Where McAlister plans to transfer to and what is the cause behind his decision to leave before the transfer window opens remains unanswered.
Avalos alluded to the departure being part of life in college football these days and appearing frustrated by “teams that are enticing guys to do this right now. Is it right? It’s not right, but to each their own…”
Avalos added at a press conference on Monday, “You have guys that are approaching 1,000 yards on the season, and they walk out because of other opportunities.”
McAlister was leading the team in receiving yards and receptions, and not by a small margin. McAlister notched 873 yards on 47 receptions with five touchdowns.
The next closest behind him on the stat sheet is Ashton Jeanty, BSU’s running back with 396 yards receiving, then Stefan Cobbs, with 241 yards on 23 receptions with one touchdown.
The Broncos are 4-5 on the season after last weekend’s loss to Fresno State and are currently 4th in the Mountain West.
Still to come on the schedule for BSU this season is New Mexico next weekend, followed by Utah State and a top-25 Air Force team that is unbeaten in conference play.
