LSU head football coach Brian Kelly reveals Tigers’ ‘very aggressive’ four-step recruiting masterplan after Bryce Underwood’s flip
With three consecutive losses crushing their mighty playoff hopes and $10.5 million NIL-valuated QB recruit Bryce Underwood flipping his commitment to Michigan, the 2024 college football season couldn’t be any worse for LSU.
Brian Kelly got plenty of heat too, but the Tigers’ head coach is not letting the narrative repeat next season with his “very aggressive” four-step recruiting process this offseason to have “one of, if not the best” class in 2025.
“We’ll be very aggressive. I think everybody that’s followed us knows we weren’t very aggressive in the transfer portal. We put together a defensive line using minimal resources. We’ve really put ourselves in a position, and I’ll use this term loosely, to stay well under the cap so we could be quite aggressive this year and we will be very aggressive in that area,” Kelly said in his Kelly said during a November 25 press conference, highlighting how sparse resources won’t be a problem this time like the previous transfer portal.
Additionally, the LSU head coach also highlighted how he has already started working on this “aggressive approach”.
” We’re gonna have 16 mid-years. The program and the standards are such that we can do
We’re having meetings with players so it starts with retention first, the players that have to make decisions on whether they move on to the NFL or they’re gonna stay here. The first part of that is retaining players you want.”
“The second part of that is the ongoing recruiting process and bringing players in through recruiting.”
“The third part of that is the transfer portal and identifying particular positions you believe that you need to get a mature player who has played snaps at that position at a level that can impact your roster right away.”
“The fourth is who are the guys that are going to stay on this team and you’re evaluating those players that have stayed above the cut,” Kelly said.
While Kelly didn’t particularly mention the positions they’ll focus on, LSU needs urgent depth and serious talent at WR and QB offensively and would benefit from safeties defensively.
Retaining the 26 commits this off-season, and adding more will be an even bigger battle for Kelly than this regular season.
