The Winnipeg Blue Bombers re-signed kicker Sergio Castillo to a one-year contract extension through the 2025 season on Thursday.
Sergio Castillo is five foot eleven and weighs 196 pounds. The 34-year-old from La Joya, Texas, re-signed with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers on February 23, 2024.
In 2024, Castillo made 66 kickoffs for 4,463 yards (67.6 AVG) with a long of 99 yards, made 51 of 64 field goals (79.7%) with a long of 60 yards, and made 38 of 39 extra points in 18 games.
Castillo signed with the Atlanta Falcons as an undrafted free agent on June 12, 2014. He played one preseason game against the Miami Dolphins with two kickoffs for 132 yards (66.0 AVG), made 2 of 2 field goals (100%) with a long of 34 yards, and punted the ball two times for 93 yards (46.5%) with a long of 50 yards. The Falcons released him on August 9, 2014.
Castillo signed with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats on August 7, 2015, but was released on August 24, 2015. Next, he signed with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers on August 28, 2015.
He made 10 of 13 field goals (76.9%) with a long of 48 yards, converted 5 of 6 extra points, and eight punts for 320 yards in four games before he was released on September 2, 2016.
Castillo signed with the Ottawa Redblacks on September 11, 2016. He had seven kickoffs for 460 yards (65.7 AVG) with a long of 70 yards and punted the ball 13 times for 472 yards (45.2%) with a long of 90 yards in two games. The Redblacks released him on September 26, 2016.
After Ottawa, Castillo signed with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats on May 28, 2017. He had 47 kickoffs for 2,946 yards (62.7 AVG) with a long of 95 yards, made 29 of 34 field goals with a long of 57 yards, converted 20 of 21 extra points, and punted the ball 93 times for 3,181 yards in 14 games before missing the rest of the season with an ACL injury.
In 2018, he returned to Ottawa for a tryout but did not make the team. A year later, he signed with the San Antonio Commanders (AAF) but was released before the season started.
Not long after being released, Castillo signed with the B.C. Lions on May 25, 2019. In 2019, he had 76 kickoffs for 4,521 yards (59.5 AVG), with a long of 73 yards, made 41 of 45 field goals (91.1%) with a long of 52 yards, converted 30 of 33 extra points, and punted the ball 20 times for 598 yards in 18 games. He was named a CFL West All-Star and CFL All-Star in 2019.
Castillo was drafted by the Houston Roughnecks (XFL) in 2020. He made 5 of 9 field goals (55.6%) with a long of 44 yards in five games before the league shutdown due to the pandemic.
After the cancellation of the 2020 CFL season in which he signed with the B.C. Lions, Castillo signed with the New York Jets in 2020. He made 8 of 13 field goals (61.5%) with a long of 55 yards and converted 6 of 7 extra points.
Castillo signed with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers on October 19, 2021. In 2021, he had 10 kickoffs for 653 yards (65.3 AVG) with a long of 75 yards, converted 7 of 9 field goals (77.8%) with a long of 50 yards, and made 4 of 5 extra point conversions in three games, helping the Blue Bombers win their second Grey Cup title over the Hamilton Tiger-Cats.
Then, Castillo signed with the Edmonton Elks as a free agent on March 14, 2022. In 2022, Castillo had 49 kickoffs for 2,942 yards (60.0 AVG) with a long of 100 yards, converted 37 of 44 field goals (84.1%) with a long of 52 yards, made 26 of 29 extra point conversions, and punted the ball eight times for 266 yards in 18 games.
The Winnipeg Blue Bombers signed Castillo on May 4, 2023. In 2023, Castillo had 91 kickoffs for 5,974 yards (65.6 AVG) with a long of 90 yards, converted 46 of 51 field goals (90.2%) with a long of 53 yards, and made 53 of 57 extra points in 18 games.
Collegiately, Castillo played four seasons at West Texas A&M (2010-13) making 38 of 49 field goals in his career with a long of 56, converting 174 of 177 extra points.
He ranks third all-time in school history in scoring at 288 points. He is a two-time First Team All-Lone Star Conference.
