Matt Peet has explained the absence of Liam Farrell, with the Wigan Warriors going without their captain for Saturday’s Super League semi-final against Leigh Leopards.

Farrell is out due to illness, with Sam Walters instead starting in the back row alongside Junior Nsemba. The veteran, meanwhile, has been fighting the virus for the last fortnight, with Wigan having no game last week after finishing top of the pile as league leaders.

Peet confirmed the Wigan staff will take no risks with Farrell’s health, with a number of tests still to pass before he is fit and available to play.

Speaking on Sky Sports before the game, Peet said: “He’s had a virus for the last couple of weeks, but he needs to pass a few more tests until we put him out in the game. If he comes through them, then potentially next week he could be okay. But we’ve got to do the right thing for Liam.”

Leigh have also been dealt an injury blow, with Kai O’Donnell unable to feature. The back rower isn’t fit for the clash after missing last week’s elimination play-off at Salford Red Devils. Hull-bound forward Oliver Holmes is instead drafted in. Elsewhere, Zak Hardaker takes a spot on the wing, with Josh Charnley out with after a failed HIA.

The winner will play Hull KR in the Super League Grand Final next week.
