Sam Burgess pays tribute to departing star as Warrington Wolves confirm five exits
Warrington Wolves have announced that Josh Drinkwater will be leaving the club at the end of the 2024 campaign. Drinkwater is in the final year of his contract at the Halliwell Jones Stadium, but he will be allowed to move on when his deal expires.
Drinkwater has been with the Wolves for two seasons and in that time he has made 47 appearances and scored five tries. The Australian has spent much of his career in England with spells coming at Catalans Dragons, Hull KR, Leigh and London Broncos prior to his arrival at Warrington.
However, his next move remains up in the air, with the 32-year-old a free agent and able to join any Super League club with space on their overseas quota. His exit has been confirmed alongside four others with Matty Nicholson moving to Canberra Raiders, Gil Dudson joining League One winning outfit Oldham and winger Matty Russell also leaving.
John Bateman’s future has also been firmed up by the club, with the back-rower due to return to Australia in order to see out his deal with Wests Tigers.
“I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my two seasons at the club and have met some of the best people in the game from the owner Simon Moran through to the playing group and staff,” Drinkwater told the Warrington Wolves website.
“I wish the club nothing but success in the years ahead and it’s been a pleasure playing for the Wire.”
Head coach Sam Burgess added: “Josh has been an integral part of our team and the way we play.
“He’s been great with his leadership with the younger players and at driving standards, especially with Leon [Hayes] and he competed hard with him during pre-season. We wish him all the best in his next endeavour. He’s left the place in great order.”
