Texas Tech Suspends Four Football Players; Joey McGuire Says They Could Return ‘Soon’ Or ‘Never Be Back’…

Texas Tech Red Raiders Archives - Awful Announcing

He was also the defensive coordinator for the Georgia Bulldogs for seventeen years and head football coach of the Georgia Southern Eagles. He was also the head coach at Grady High School in Atlanta, Georgia in the 1950s.

The Red Raiders suspended a quartet of athletes on its roster on Tuesday — which included some key pieces on offense and defense.

According to the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal’s Don Williams, head football coach Matt Well said in a post-practice media session that junior running back Da’Leon Ward,

junior defensive back Damarcus Fields, junior defensive lineman Joseph Wallace and redshirt freshman wide receiver Corey Fulcher were suspended due to “internal reasons” Tuesday morning.

Asked Tuesday if the disciplinary actions were an example, Wells said, “We’re not going to lower the standard. There’s a way to do things around here.

It’s an honor, it’s a privilege to work and to play and to coach at Texas Tech. Nobody’s entitled, and I’m not inferring that those guys are. I’m just saying that we’re going to do things the right way around here, or we’re not going to play or practice or coach.”

Ward, who was a redshirt sophomore a season ago and was limited to nine games due to an injury, was a viable option in the backfield.

He finished last year with 79 carries for 341 yards and three touchdowns while corralling 26 receptions for 196 yards and a touchdown. Only quarterback Jett Duffey had more rushing yards last season.

Fulcher hasn’t seen any playing time with the Red Raiders, but had the potential to breakout on offense. The Lake Highlands graduate — expected to line up at wide receiver — rushed for 647 yards and 18 touchdowns in his high school senior campaign, while recording 54 receptions for 556 yards and three touchdowns.

The offense takes a hit with the suspensions, but maybe not as big a hit as the defense takes.

Fields was a shining spot in what could be the Red Raiders weakest core on defense — the secondary. The returning cornerback recorded 38 tackles and 11 pass breakups as a sophomore in 2018. Fields also tied for the most forced fumbles with two.

Wallace — a Skyline graduate — started in all 12 games last year and helped solidify the defensive line. He was second among the defensive lineman in tackles with 37 a season ago, had a quarterback hurry and recorded a forced fumble.
