Will Rogers met a situation he didn’t like. Hours after Washington football head coach Kalen DeBoer was hired at Alabama, the Huskies’ quarterback in waiting Rogers announced he will re-enter the transfer portal.
Rogers, a Brandon native, entered the portal in December and transferred to Washington after four outstanding seasons at Mississippi State.
He ranks second in Southeastern Conference history in career passing yards with 12,315, first in completions, and threw 94 touchdown passes.
Rogers was not eligible to play for Washington in the postseason, but was on the sideline in their jersey for the national championship game against Michigan on Jan. 8.
He was expected to replace Heisman Trophy runner-up Michael Penix Jr. as the Huskies’ starting quarterback next season. DeBoer’s departure changed those plans, however.
In addition to the coach leaving for the SEC, Washington running back Dillon Johnson — Rogers’ former Mississippi State teammate — announced he planned to forgo his final college season to enter the NFL draft.
It was unclear whether Rogers, who has one year of eligibility remaining, will follow DeBoer to Alabama or go to another school.
Alabama will have its starting quarterback Jalen Milroe back for another season, after he passed for 2,834 yards and 23 touchdowns while rushing for 531 yards and 12 TDs in 2023.
