Pittsburgh Steelers are signing of a world-class star

Pittsburgh Steelers sign former Jacksonville Jaguars safety

The Pittsburgh Steelers are signing former Jacksonville Jaguars safety Ayo Oyelola to their practice squad. Oyelola will act as the team’s international exemption on the practice squad, bringing the practice squad to its full 17 players. That spot would have likely gone to Julius Welschof before he suffered a knee injury, causing the Steelers to place him on injured reserve and then released him with an injury settlement.

Oyelola hails from London, United Kingdom, and was introduced to football while studying law at the University of Nottingham. He saw Saquon Barkley’s highlights, and that is when Oyelola fell in love and decided to pursue the sport. Oyelola tried out for multiple NFL teams to kick off his career, but was not signed. So, for his first season, he spent it in Canada in the CFL with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.

After winning the Grey Cup with the Blue Bombers, Oyelola was signed by the Jacksonville Jaguars, where he spent the last two seasons with the team in the International Pathway Program. He played in two preseason in 2022 and 2023 for the Jaguars, playing on both defense and special teams.

Oyelola is the only safety the Steelers have on the practice squad after rostering five, with Jalen Elliott as the surprise inclusion. Rookie Ryan Watts was placed on season-ending injured reserve after suffering an injury in their final preseason game against the Detroit Lions.
