Good as Goldy: North Melbourne ruckman Todd Goldstein to leave Roos after 315 games

Goldstein played 315 games during a stellar career at the Kangaroos, but his senior playing opportunities were set to be severely limited if he remained at Arden Street next year, with Tristan Xerri, who played the final eight games of the season, set to be first-choice ruckman.

Goldstein also met with Collingwood last week, but decided against joining the reigning premier in favour of the Bombers.

He will compete with Sam Draper and Nick Bryan for a spot in the side, although Scott prefers to play two rucks and Draper is set for an interrupted pre-season after undergoing groin surgery last week.

Goldstein is the second player Scott has poached from the Roos with fellow free agent Ben McKay also on the move to Essendon.

“It’s been a really tough decision,” Goldstein said two weeks ago when he announced his North Melbourne departure.

“I’ve been talking to my manager and my family about what’s going to be best for us going forward … and I think that’s to look for other opportunities elsewhere.

“It’s probably time for the club to have a clean break and give Tristan the opportunity to shine in the number one ruck role.”

The cashed-up Bombers have also been linked to St Kilda free agent Jade Gresham in what shapes as a busy off-season.
