IT’S OFFICIAL: Brentford has announces the signing of a fullback

Brentford signs Southampton’s fullback prodigy

Recently, the Saints reached an agreement with Flamengo to sell Argentina midfielder Carlos Alcaraz for a transfer fee of £18 million. This move came as a surprise considering Alcaraz is a promising midfielder who would have been a key player for Southampton in this season. Now, Russell Martin’s side have sold another young prodigy to a Premier League team.

Jayden Meghoma is an 18-year-old rising left back, who came up through the youth ranks at Southampton. The fullback’s impressive displays for Southampton’s U21 team attracted transfer interest from several Premier League teams like Newcastle United, Nottingham Forest and Brentford. Now, transfer expert, Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that Meghoma has joined Brentford, saying,

Meghoma will continue his development as a left back playing for Brentford’s youth teams, and then will make his Premier League debut in the coming seasons. Although Southampton already have Kyle Walker Peters and new signing Yukinari Sugawara as the fullbacks in their squad, Meghoma would have been a long term option at left back for the Saints. In this transfer window, Kyle Walker Peters was the subject of a huge transfer interest from West Ham and Newcastle United, who wanted to sign the 27-year-old after his impressive performances in the Championship last season.

Thus, in case Southampton received a great transfer offer for Walker Peters, they would likely have considered the idea of giving chances to their academy talent Jayden Meghoma. However, this isn’t the case and Walker Peters is staying at the St. Mary’s Stadium this summer, who is once again expected to contribute both in the attack as well as the defence in Southampton’s aim to avoid relegation this season. Further, Southampton have a decent squad and manager Russell Martin needs to find a perfect balance in the lineup to take points from the next games as they have faced back to back defeats in the Premier League this season.
