Cronulla Sharks chairman Steve Mace has recounted the horrifying moment he heroically left his car following a car accident in Engadine, south of Sydney, before he came face to face with an alleged knife-wielding attacker.
Mace was asked about the episode in a video after the “extraordinary incident” which had tragically unfolded following a two car crash in Engadine on Sunday morning.
The Sharks boss relayed how he was on the way to take his son to his knock-out elimination final game when a car accident happened in front of them.
It is understood a 55-year-old allegedly stabbed others and himself before he was tasered by police and taken into custody.
It has been reported one police officer and up to four civilians suffered “multiple stab wounds”.
The two-vehicle car crash occurred about 9am at the intersection of Princes Highway and Old Bush Road.
Mace told his son to stay in the car as he got out to make sure “these people are alright, looks like their airbags have gone off”.
“I jumped out the car, went around, I heard the guy screaming in the driver’s (seat), then I heard his wife, partner, screaming even louder so I went around to the passenger (side), I tried to open the door and finally jammed it open,” he said.
“And all of a sudden I see him just slashing her, just cutting her, he’s cutting her neck, he cut her breast – it was hanging off – across the stomach, in the legs, in the side, wherever he could go.
“I was then trying to drag her out of the car to stop the stabbing, he was swiping at us. There was another gentleman that came to help, that poor gentleman tried to grab her legs, he didn’t realise he had the knife, he copped a gash from sort of up here (shoulder) to his belly button, poor fella.”
Mace said when they managed to rescue the woman from the car, the alleged perpetrator left the vehicle and tried to come back around to get to the female passenger.
The Sharks chairman said he grabbed a “little torch” and had a standoff with the knife wielding man which “felt like an hour” before police finally arrived.
“All he was then worried about was preaching to us all, he then turned around to go for my little fella which that fired me up and I bolted around the other side of the car,” Mace said.
“Then the police turned up, tasered him, he somehow ran up the hill and then I found out that poor police officer was stabbed as well.
“It’s just an unfortunate, tragic thing on Sunday morning.”
Mace said the alleged stabber’s aggressive outburst was in part due to the female passenger having changed the radio station.
He then began chanting words to the effect of: “We’re all dead anyway”, while yelling about a “big conspiracy about the jab and we’re all getting followed”.
“There was nothing more to it, he was just up and down, he seemed calm in the environment with myself and the other gentleman but anyone else who didn’t fit his category he was going for the jugular,” Mace said.
The Shark’s boss received a minor abrasion to his right hand.
