Minnesota Vikings two best player suffered a career-ending injury

Cam Akers suffers possible career-ending injury in Vikings win over Falcons

The former Los Angeles Rams running back can’t seem to catch a break when it comes to injuries.

When Cam Akers was traded to the Minnesota Vikings in September of this year, it was set to be a fresh start for both the player and his former team, the Los Angeles Rams.

Kyren Williams broke onto the scene for the Rams, churning out production until a knee injury landed him on IR in mid-October. Akers took a little while to get acclimated, but began racking up double digit touches in games beginning in Week 7.

Cam Akers tears his Achilles again

He hit double digits again on Sunday against the Atlanta Falcons, but he suffered an injury in the second half that left him unable to put weight on his left leg.

The injury was initially deemed an “ankle”, but following the game, Vikingshead coach Kevin O’Connell said the team believes Akers suffered a torn Achilles.

This would be the second Achilles tear for Akers in his career, although this one is to his other leg.

Akers tore his right Achilles during training camp ahead of the 2021 season. The running back made a speedy recovery, making a regular season appearance and then playing in all four of the Rams’ playoff games during their Super Bowl run.

The following season, in 2022, Akers was not a featured part of the offense early in the year. He proceeded to request a trade, although he later denied it. Akers then saw big workloads with the Rams’ season virtually over.

But in 2023, it was clear the Rams didn’t value him highly. That’s why he was traded to Minnesota. Akers had only averaged 2.7 yards per carry this year with the Vikings. With yet another torn Achilles to recover from, it’s fair to wonder if we’ve seen the last of the running back in the NFL.
