Grizzlies Release Veteran Forward
Mamadi Diakite joined the Memphis Grizzlies last month but he won’t be with them when the new season begins in October.
On Tuesday morning, Shams Charania reported that the Grizzlies had released Diakite.
This gives Memphis an open roster slot but it’s not entirely clear how they will fill it.
Diakite played for the San Antonio Spurs and New York Knicks last season but only participated in six games collectively.
During that time, he averaged 2 points per game.
He has been in the league for four seasons and has played for five different teams, averaging 3.1 points and 2.3 rebounds during that time.
With Diakite out of the picture, the Grizzlies now have 14 players on standard contracts, which means they have an open slot that they could fill at any time.
While there is a chance that they secure one more player before the new season begins, it’s more likely that they will keep the spot open to maintain a level of flexibility.
The team’s training camp begins on October 1 in Nashville and their first preseason game is on October 7.
As for Diakite, no one is quite sure where he will go next.
Although he obviously has talent, he can’t seem to stay in one place for a long time.
He could have luck earning a two-way contract with a team or he might be out of the league for some time.
At 27 years old, he still has time to make an impact in the NBA but so far he has mostly been used as a trade chip throughout his career.
