Getting to know new Blackhawks assistant coach Tomas Mitell
Jeremy Colliton continues to put his stamp on the Blackhawks as head coach.
This offseason, Colliton was given full control of shaping his coaching staff, and that began shortly after the season by parting ways with assistant coach Don Granato. On Thursday, Colliton announced the hiring of assistant Tomas Mitell, his former assistant at Mora IK in Sweden.
Just as Colliton may have been an outside-the-box choice for the Blackhawks, Mitell is one in his own way. He’s never played or coached in the NHL and has just five years of coaching experience under his belt. He was an assistant in Sweden’s second division, Allsvenskan, for three seasons, including one with Colliton, and has spent the last two seasons as the head coach of AIK in Allsvenskan.
While Mitell’s resume may not scream NHL assistant, his hiring is further proof that Colliton will do what he believes is best for his team. Colliton didn’t exactly take a traditional path to coaching, and it’s clear he’ll stay true to himself going forward.
“I think that’s the whole thing — that he do a lot of different things,” the 38-year-old Mitell said by phone from Sweden on Thursday. “When he get into Swedish hockey, everyone thought the same thing. He do a lot of different things and he doesn’t do it like anybody else do. I think that’s what makes him great — he do different things. If he feel good about it and you have the motivation for what you want to do, he’s not afraid to test it. I think that’s what makes him good — he doesn’t do it like everybody else do. He has success with it a lot of times.”
For Colliton, there’s certainly a comfort and confidence in Mitell from their time together. Colliton and Mora sporting director Peter Hermodsson worked their way through an assortment of assistant candidates before the 2016-17 season, choosing Mitell after Colliton had multiple conversations with him and found their hockey views aligned. The following season, Colliton and Mitell guided Mora to promotion to Sweden’s top division.
