The Allman Brothers guitarist Dickey Betts has sadly died at the age of 80, with the news coming after his family confirmed the star’s passing on Instagram
The Allman Brothers Band guitarist Dickey Betts has died at the age of 80, his family has confirmed on social media today.
Taking to social media, his family posted on Dickey’s Instagram page. They revealed that he had passed away in his Florida home on Thursday. Dickey’s family penned: “It is with profound sadness and heavy hearts that the Betts family announce the peaceful passing of Forrest Richard ‘Dickey’ Betts (December 12, 1943 – April 18, 2024) at the age of 80 years old.”
They went on to add that the “legendary performer, songwriter, bandleader and family patriarch” passed away on Thursday at his home in Osprey, Florida.
They noted how Dickey was “surrounded by his family” when he passed, adding: “Dickey was larger than life, and his loss will be felt world-wide.”
Concluding their statement, his family went on: “At this difficult time, the family asks for prayers and respect for their privacy in the coming days. More information will be forthcoming at the appropriate time.”
Reacting to the sad news, fans of Dickey flocked to the comment section of the post. One person penned: “Oh no! This is heartbreaking news!! So sorry for Duane, Lisa and the family. We have lost one of the great guitarists and musicians! Fly High Dickey!”
While another said: “Sad news, got to see him play several times through the years. Even caught his guitar pick at the Spectrum in 90 or 91. Still one of the best nights of live music I’ve ever seen. Just beautiful.” And a third penned: “RIP Dickey. You were one of greatest.”
