Report: Magpies CEO at centre of racism allegations filed in court
The Collingwood Football Club is reportedly embroiled in a fresh racism scandal centred on its chief executive officer.
Magpies CEO Craig Kelly is accused in court documents of making numerous racist remarks, including ones aimed at the club’s former head of First Nations strategy — and Palawa person — Mark Cleaver.
Cleaver was employed by the Magpies in November 2023 following the publication of the Do Better report in 2021.
Herald Sun journalists Michael Warner and Ashley Argoon on Tuesday reported claims made by Cleaver in court documents regarding the behaviour of Kelly.
Foxsports.com.au does not suggest that the allegations are true, only that they have been made in documents before the court.
The 58-year-old Kelly, who played 122 games for the Pies between 1989-96, is accused of joking about placing a “live f***ing possum” in a dedicated room for Indigenous players as well as calling an Aboriginal elder a “dumb old bitch”.
The documents were reportedly filed with the Federal Circuit and Family Court of Australia on Monday.
Among other accusations, Cleaver reportedly claimed Kelly made an unsavoury remark to a woman of Asian descent: “About halfway back to the office, on or about High Street or Hoddle Street … an Asian lady was walking across the road nearing the middle of the road. Mr Kelly swerved the car so it passed close by her, yelled ‘statistic’ and laughed.”
Kelly is also accused of joking about sending ‘Free Palestine’ material to a Jewish colleague to ‘wind her up’.
