Georgia added another key defensive commitment in its 2025 recruiting class. The blue-chip safety went into his decision.
Georgia’s run on blue-chip 2025 defensive back recruiting take center stage again: Rashad Johnson is a Dawg.
On Sunday night, the South Sumter (Fla.) safety announced his commitment decision, choosing Georgia over Penn State and Texas A&M. Johnson let coaches know about a week or so after his run on official vsiits.
Johnson explained why the Bulldogs were the choice.
“I knew it was Georgia when I went up there on a visit, you know what I mean? It just felt like home,” Johnson told Dawgs247. “It’s the standard of everything. I want to get coached by the best.”
In June, Johnson officially visited four programs — Louisville, Penn State, Georgia, and Texas A&M. The 6-foot-2, 200-pound safety rearranged his official visit schedule, which originally included UCF, to accommodate Georgia. He visited Athens for the June 14-16 official visit weekend.
Johnson didn’t let coaches know Georgia would be the choice until after the fact. He went to Texas A&M the following week and returned home to talk over the decision with his parents. That’s when he made the final decision a few weeks after the Georgia visit and called coaches from all four programs to let them know the Bulldogs were the pick.
Johnson said Penn State was the program that finished second in this recruitment.
Ultimately, he said it was the relationship and history of new co-defensive coordinator and safeties coach Travaris Robinson that tipped the scales.
“With T-Rob, I want to get coached by the best. He’s done his thing in the past. I feel like I can come in and do my thing with him,” Johnson said. “He’s been one of my favorite coaches through the whole process.”
On Johnson’s official visit, he spent a lot of his time with player-host Joenel Aguero. That makes sense based on how Georgia is recruiting him. Robinson — with Donte Williams as the secondary recruiter — told Johnson during film study they see him as someone who could play Star or free safety for the Bulldogs.
Johnson joins a 2025 defensive backfield that now includes Todd Robinson, Shamari Earls, and Jaylan Morgan — all 4-star commits.
With Johnson’s commitment. Georgia has 20 pledges in the Class of 2025. That brings the Bulldogs to a class total of 283.77, which extends Georgia’s lead on Oregon for the No. 3 spot in the recruiting team rankings behind Ohio State and Alabama.
Johnson ranks as the nation’s No. 24 safety in the country in the 247Sports recruiting team rankings. He’s the No. 33-ranked prospect in Florida.
