There’s been a lot of talk about Sepultura and its planned twilight as they continue their farewell tour around the world.
It’s an end of an era and it’s gotten fans wondering if there will ever be a time when Max and Igor Cavalera could hop on stage with the band they helped create four decades ago.
Normally, the conversation wouldn’t even be had, since the split’s been pretty firmly cemented over the years. Yet during a recent interview, guitarist Andreas Kisser floated the idea, saying that “it would be great” to play with the Cavaleras once again. And just like that, the masses began floating the question once again — could we actually see a real Sepultura reunion?
As it turns out, the answer for Max Cavalera is still a firm “no.” Earlier today, our friends over at Metal Injection ran an interview with the man himself.
Though the discussion was wide ranging, they did eventually talk about the end of Sepultura, which Max said is sort of surprising in his eyes.
“My insight about the whole thing is I’m kind of surprised by it, you know. As far as a reunion – I wanted to reunite with my brother and that’s what he also said a long time ago when we first got together.
So to me that was the real reunion, me and him, and we did that and it’s opened the doors for all these re-recordings and playing, all these records. It is so cool the way we’re doing them.”
Recent months have seen the Cavalera brothers releasing re-recorded versions of some of Sepultura’s early offerings like Bestial Devastation, Morbid Visions, and Schizophrenia. At the time, Max said he and his brother wanted to re-record those offerings so they could sound more in tune with how they imagined they’d sound back in the day.
With Sepultura calling it quits, Max said he feels like he’s now able to focus on what he and his brother wants to do. Rejoining Sepultura in its final moments, however, would bring back same negativity that pushed him out of the band in the first place.
“So for me, there’s not really a reason to go back to Sepultura. I know it would be back to more stress and stuff that I don’t really need in my life, man, and I think us playing live, and even having like Travis and Igor Amadeus with us is so badass because they connect with the younger generation.
Yeah, I don’t see a need to do a reunion and I think more than ever now, especially now that they’re gonna disband. The band is done and me and Igor will get to keep doing what we want with Cavalera Conspiracy, which is Sepultura in itself.”
Ultimately, Max said the idea of coming back to Sepultura is just not in the cards, especially given how much time has passed and how well he perceives the Cavalera band doing lately.
“The more the time passes by, the more I feel that I don’t need to. Like I said, the real reunion is between myself and Igor, and I did that.
It’s pure magic and amazing what we’re doing right now. You kind of have to realize if we end up doing a Sepultura reunion, it’s almost like we can’t go back to the Cavalera thing, You know? It won’t really make sense.
People probably will be like ‘I don’t want to go watch Cavalera if they’re doing a ‘real’ reunion. To me, I don’t want to do that because I love what we have here in Cavalera now. It’s so Bad ass. So yeah, it’s definitely out of the question.
“You can ask Igor the same question. He doesn’t want to do it either. I think people can just give up, it’s not gonna happen man. It’s not gonna happen.
“It had its time. You have all the videos to watch and we’re still carrying it. The spirit is with us, the spirit of the whole thing is with me and Igor right now in Cavalera. They’re gonna call it quits, they’re gonna be done and it is what it is.”

Andreas Kisser Thinks “It Would Be Great” to Have the Cavaleras On for Final Sepultura Show
JUNE 24TH, 2024 AT 3:13PM0
The time where we’ll all be living in a world without Sepultura in the mix is approaching. As it stands, their final show will take place this coming October in New York City, so that means we’ve got around four months left. Not much time at all.
With time whittling away, people have been wondering what it would take to get Max and Igor Cavalera back in the band for a final reunion of sorts. It’s long since felt like that would never happen, but recent comments made by guitarist Andreas Kisser during an interview with Metal Hammer make it sound like there’s a small chance that at least he would want it to happen.
“I won’t deny that it would be great to have a very last show with their participation, but it has to be great. It has to have people who are there to celebrate and not trying to discuss who was right or wrong on decisions from the past. In the end, we are celebrating now as the Sepultura of today. If they want to be a part of it, it would be amazing.”
Indeed, Andreas. That would be amazing as hell. It’s been a looong time since it sounded like something like this would be a possibility, so any opportunity to get the original frontman and drummer back with the band is something people should be clamoring to make happen. Especially since the brothers have begun looking at their Sepultura legacy and re-recording past releases.
Just as Kisser was asked about a potential reunion, so was Max during an interview with Hard Rock Greece. The line of questioning started pretty simply enough, asking if an the band reached out to be involved in the final shows.
“I have not [been approached]. In fact, I think I saw one thing Andreas, of course said [in an interview], like, ‘Why are we gonna ask them [Max and Igor to take part]? They’re gonna spoil the party,’ which is very typical [laughs] of Andreas to say that.
“I don’t know. I think I’m gonna let things happen the way they’re gonna happen. I’m not gonna force anything, and if there comes a time where we feel that we should make a reunion — okay, fine, as long as we do it the right way.
Just like with these re-recordings [of early Sepultura albums that Igor and I are doing under the Cavalera name]. I think we made them the right way — honest, proper, from the heart.
“So right now I’m not thinking about that [a reunion]. I know they announced the end of the band. I don’t understand this idea.
I don’t know if they were forced to do it, or if it’s a mutual decision of just stop playing ’cause you don’t wanna do it anymore. I don’t know. I myself cannot live without music. I need to play live. It’s like the air I breathe.
“I love what I’m doing right now with Igor, with Cavalera and we’re gonna continue.”
