GOOD NEWS: Port Vale has now complete a huge signing

Vale sign midfielder Byers after he was released by the Owls.
Following his release by Sheffield Wednesday, Port Vale have signed midfielder George Byers to a three-year contract.

The move will reunite him with Vale manager Darren Moore, who was in charge of Hillsborough from March 2021 to June 2023.

Byers scored one goal in 22 Championship appearances for Wednesday last season before being loaned out to Blackpool.

He is Vale’s tenth summer signing following their relegation from League One last season.

“George is a player I know very well from my time at Sheffield Wednesday. Moore told the club website that “his energy, drive, and quality on the ball will be attributes that our supporters will appreciate.”

“Positive competition in all positions is essential, and George will increase competition for places among our already competitive midfield options.”

Vale will begin the new League Two season with a trip to Salford City on August 10.

As is now customary, former Port Vale manager Andy Crosby has issued a statement via the League Managers’ Association website. Crosby expresses gratitude to the club as well as the fans.

Crosby, who had previously served as manager in two interim spells, was given a permanent contract in the summer but was fired in January after a poor run of results.

His complete statement on the LMA website reads:

“Being appointed Manager of Port Vale Football Club was and will always be a proud achievement.

“Since joining the club as Assistant Manager just over three years ago, my journey has been extremely rewarding, from winning eight consecutive games and ensuring League Two survival to defeating Mansfield Town in the 2021-2022 Play-Off Final.”

“Prior to that historic day, I was asked to fill in on an interim basis. Defeating Swindon Town on penalties in the semi-finals of the EFL League Two Play-Offs and leading the team to Wembley Stadium are accomplishments that I will always be proud of, alongside the players and the club.
