5-star EDGE Isaiah Gibson commits to Georgia
Let Georgia’s run on good news with in-state 5-stars continue: Isaiah Gibson is a Dawg.
The 5-star EDGE from Warner Robins (Ga.) has been one of Georgia’s top targets all cycle long despite his surprise pledge to USC in the spring. Last week, Gibson announced he backed off that pledge to the Trojans. It didn’t take long for Georgia to end up on the right side of that decommitment.
On Monday, Gibson announced his commitment to Georgia, taking a pop-up visit to Athens to start the dead period.
“Athens is just great. I feel like, to me, Athens is unmatched,” Gibson told Dawgs247 earlier this spring. “Football, outside of football, they meet every criteria for me.”
Gibson’s commitment to the Bulldogs comes after three visits to Georgia since the middle of May. He went to Athens for the scavenger hunt and returned a couple weeks after that for his official visit. Gibson originally planned to take his last weekend’s official visit to Oklahoma, but he cancelled that to take an unofficial trip to Georgia.
The Bulldogs never let up for the 6-foot-5, 250-pound EDGE.
Immediately after his spring USC surprise, Georgia coaches — all the way at the top — were quick to touch base.
“Honestly, after I committed, Coach Smart texted me one minute after I committed. Coach Smart, Coach Schumann, Coach Diribe, Coach Scott, everybody was like they’re going to be there until the end,” Gibson said. “They were just saying they were going to be there until the end.”
Despite the USC road bump, Gibson’s love for the Bulldogs never wavered.
“It’s just been amazing energy since I stepped in the building. Coach Diribe, the energy was there from Day 1,” he said. “It was everything about Georgia, I really did like.”
Gibson has been listed as an EDGE or a defensive lineman at varying points in his recruiting process. Chidera Uzo-Diribe has always been his lead recruiter at Georgia, and Gibson’s always said the Bulldogs are recruiting him as an EDGE. He’s ranked as the No. 1 EDGE in the country in the 247Sports recruiting rankings.
“They see me playing on the EDGE. I love the overall personality of Coach Diribe,” he said. “We’ve built up the relationship over time, and Coach Diribe and I got really close.”
The 5-star EDGE is the No. 17 overall prospect in the country.
