Deon Cain is back with the Birmingham Stallions.
Following a successful 2023 season with the Birmingham Stallions, wide receiver Deon Cain is excited to return for the 2024 season.
“I’m excited to get back into Protective Stadium,” Cain said. “I definitely felt like last year, in my first year in the USFL, Birmingham had a great turnout at every home game.”
Deon Cain, a pro football veteran, attended Tampa Bay Technical High School in Tampa, Florida, where he played quarterback for the high school football team. He committed to playing college football at Clemson after being rated as a five-star recruit.
Cain played wide receiver at Clemson. As a true freshman in 2015, he appeared in 13 games and had 34 receptions for 582 yards and five touchdowns. Cain appeared in all 15 Clemson games in 2016, including the 2017 College Football Playoff National Championship victory over Alabama, and finished the season with 38 receptions for 724 yards and nine touchdowns. After his junior season, Cain decided to forego his senior year and enter the 2018 NFL Draft.
He was selected by the Indianapolis Colts in the sixth round (185th overall). However, he tore his ACL in a Colts preseason game, cutting short his promising rookie season. Cain did not make his NFL debut until the Colts’ 2019 season opener against the Los Angeles Chargers, when he caught two passes for 35 yards.
Later in the season, Cain was demoted to the Colts’ practice squad. He was quickly signed by Pittsburgh and given playing time, catching 5 passes for 72 yards over six games. After spending time on the Steelers practice squad, he was promoted to the active roster on October 17 and January 2, 2021, for the team’s weeks 6 and 17 games against the Cleveland Browns, respectively, and returned to the practice squad following each game. Cain later signed with the Baltimore Ravens and Philadelphia Eagles, but neither led to playing time.
On March 8, 2023, Cain signed with the Birmingham Stallions for the 2023 USFL season. He caught 16 passes for 182 yards and two touchdowns and was
Cain’s success in the USFL drew the attention of the Philadelphia Eagles, who signed him in time for training camp in 2023. However, Cain was released by the Eagles on August 27, 2023, as part of their final roster cuts.
Cain re-signed with the Stallions on November 30, 2023, who are now part of the UFL, which was formed by the merger of the USFL and XFL leagues.
Cain is currently in Stallions training camp, preparing for the upcoming 2024 UFL season. Cain’s job as a receiver includes learning the playbook and getting to know the quarterbacks.
“It’s been a lot of growing stages for the quarterbacks. “I feel like we’re all trying to get on the same page, which will take time,” Cain explained. “That is exactly what you want to do during training camp. All of these quarterbacks have studied and learned the playbook thoroughly. Things are definitely beginning to click.”
With two football leagues merging into one, the level of talent in training camps is higher than in previous years, which Cain has noticed.
“Last year, we had a lot of talented guys. The merger reduced the number of people significantly. Some of our team’s low-key players from last year are simply unknown. This year, you’ll see a lot of guys who have either NFL experience or years of league experience,” Cain said.
“This year, everyone is really competitive. I am confident that you will have some guys with that swag this year. “So it makes you go to work,” Cain explained.
“A lot of competition has been installed, and it’s fantastic. “We’re obviously coming together to make it a better league,” Cain stated.
