Good News for the Pittsburgh Penguins

Penguins reach ‘highest level of desperation’ following the latest road loss.
Newark, New Jersey — Jake Allen made 36 saves, and Timo Meier and Dawson Mercer each scored twice as the New Jersey Devils defeated the Pittsburgh Penguins 5-2 on Tuesday night.

Alexander Holtz also scored, and Jesper Bratt, Tomas Nosek, Jack Hughes, and Luke Hughes each added two assists as New Jersey won for the third time in eight games under interim coach Travis Green.

“One of the highlights of our games was our starting position. “I thought it was excellent,” Green stated. “Very good effort tonight.”

Pittsburgh’s Marcus Pettersson and Bryan Rust scored, and the team, like New Jersey, is out of playoff contention as the regular season winds down. The Penguins’ goaltender, Tristan Jarry, made 33 saves as they lost for the ninth time in 12 games and the 11th time in 13 road games.

Pittsburgh is winless in seven games against New Jersey (0-6-1) dating back to February 24, 2022.

“Whatever the highest level (of desperation), that’s where we are,” Penguins captain Sidney Crosby stated. “I believe that is the situation we are in, and there is nothing else to do but play with urgency and desperation and try to win one game at a time.”

At 14:20 of the second period, Meier scored his 20th goal of the season on a power play, breaking a one-all tie. It was his ninth in ten games, breaking New Jersey’s 0-for-12 streak with the man advantage.
